Theresa Fyffe opened the conference giving a background of practice development and an overview of the conference day. Brendan McCormack delivered a highly motivating talk, 'Practice Development - myths, realities and many questions'. He outlined 'technical' versus 'emancipatory' practice development and challenged us to adopt the latter within our organisations. Di Marks-Moran outlined a model of practice and education sitting side-by-side in the form of scholarly practice development. She argued that practice development is made up of the scholarship of discovery, integration, application and teaching. Eunice Muir highlighted risk in relation to practice development and outlined a model of calculating that risk.

The workshops continued the threads of the morning covering the following topics: 'Creating your vision for practice development', 'managing risk at a local level', 'problem-based learning' and 'educating ourselves for practice development'. Evaluation results highlighted in Fig 2.

General comments

Summary of additional comments made by delegates:

  • Excellent, thought provoking conference; support structure identified for delegates who wish further help in promoting ethos and embedding PD into practice

  • Very impressed by quality and standing of speakers

  • Delegates list would be useful

  • Good balance between presentations and workshops; excellent conference, well organised, good flow of subject presentation - well done

  • Please, a more central Scotland venue; hated not having handouts - powerpoint notes to add useful comments always more meaningful when back at base - how about presentation notes on website 2 days before the conference?

  • Thoroughly inspiring day, lots of food for thought

  • Great opportunity to meet others and hear new ideas, inspiring

  • Would have liked to attend more of the workshops (x 4)

  • This is the best conference I have attended in a long time addressing nursing issues

Suggestions for specific topics for next year's conference

  • Change management relating to PD

  • Competencies, supervised and self assessment of competencies

  • More of Brendan; also a politician to challenge on the flux of directives / strategies which are priorities but not owned by practitioners

  • Invite Brendan back to present development of project work in Ireland

  • PD and relationship with clinical supervision; mental health topic

  • Follow up on BUMP project from PBC

  • Learning sets; PD for care assistants etc; research in PD

  • Innovative ways to influence / change culture

  • Project management

  • Reflective practice; how to effectively implement PD

  • Practice development tools

  • More practical help

  • Some 'How to do it' workshops e.g. set up an action / learning set, facilitate a values clarification exercise

The conference was well planned, well organised and a most enjoyable day!
