I am looking at clinical supervision again and wondering what is working well for people across the country. We are struggling and I guess others are too but, particularly now, we can't throw vast amounts of money at this and unless we see real benefits people will not be willing to release staff or take part so it is patchy in its application.
I know it is an age old problem but if anyone has some way of doing things that works well I would really like to hear from them.
Thanks

I have a leader, on one of my programmes, who is thinking of implementing Patient Diaries within I.T.U., as her Service Improvement Project.
I wondered if there are any members, who have experience in this area, or know of an area that already practices these.
It would be handy to know about the legal issues, etc that have occurred, and of the good practice that has resulted from them.

We currently deliver a theory update in injection technique practice in NHS Fife, but due to the ever growing issues around the use of the dorsogluteal/ ventrogluteal site we have held back this year and have excluded it from our programme.
Can I ask?
-
Do you deliver an injection technique session?
-
Is it theory only?
-
Or does it encompass a simulated practice session?
-
If so, do you cover intra dermal/ subcutaneous/ intramuscular and intravenous?
-
If you cover intramuscular what muscle groups are discussed i.e. deltoid/ dorsogluteal/ Ventrogluteal/ rectus femoris/ vastus lateralis?
-
If you cover the Ventrogluteal site, are your staff competent in its use in practice?
-
Is there a competency based assessment/ framework?
-
Finally, do you use self- assessment within your board for sign off for clinical skills?
We would welcome any feed back, please send all replies to katrina.deas@nhs.net
Many thanks in anticipation

I have been charged with drafting a training proposal for food handling
training (for nurse, midwives, AHPS and support staff), as you know any
person handling food including beverages is classed as a "food
handler"and staff need to be trained commensurate with their work
activity. I just wondered if you could offer any advice / steer on what
your organisation has done to address this issue. Any advice, or
direction to key players would be welcome
Ever hopeful

At present we are involved in preparation for the second stage of an HMIe inspection for Child Protection. This is focusing on the self evaluation of processes leading to effective outcomes for children. Could others who have been through this process give me details about how they best engaged child protection service users/stakeholders? And as an ongoing process how training has impacted on the long term working of staff and the outcomes of clients has been assessed. At present health, S/W and education are looking at this and trying to decide how best to proceed so any info people can share would be appreciated.
Thank you. Jillian

I have had a request from the GMS Contract group. The manager is looking for a training session that would support practice nurses to manage an electronic clinical assessment.
Basically what is required is training on the skill of maintaining a patient centred focus during a clinical assessment, whilst inputting data onto a computer screen.
Does anyone know of any suitable training courses or a company that might be able to provide something appropriate.
Thanks

1. I have been working with the Clinical Support Worker (CSW) Lead to develop a PGD for Saline Flush of a venous cannula by CSW following insrtion of cannula only. We have taken it as far as we can take it and have now discovered that CSW cannot work from as PGD as they are not registered practitioners.
Is there any other boards out there experiencing the same problem?
Have any other boards managed to find a solution to this problem or have a POLICY in place allowing CSW to flush a cannula after insertion that they woiuld be willing to share with us? Any help or direction would be of huge assistance to enable us to progress this.
2. We are currently reviewing the content of our symptomatic Relief Policy and would be interested to see other Health Boards Symptomatic Relief Policies.
It would also be helpful to see the criteria for staff who can administer from the symptomatic relief policy and any competency based documents which are used to support this and assist practitioners to maintain competency.
Thanks

I am currently looking at leg ulcer provision within community. We have a clinic which we are struggling to maintain. I would be interested to hear of other places who have a leg ulcer clinic supported by nurses who have been funded outwith the district nurse service. We still keep the patients on until healed which makes us have a large waiting list - any suggestions how we do this differently would be welcome. Willing to travel to see this in action (within reasonable distance - Australia not an option - unfortunately!)

We have recently pulled together a group to look at current immuniastion practices across the organisation, following on from a report / audit that looked at the time spent with each patient, quaity of the appointment and consistency accross the oranisation amongst other things, as we are aware that current practices cannot be sustained. We are considering skill mix and PHN support nurse development.
It would be great if anybody would who is looking at this area and has started to develop or change the ways in which immunisations are delivered in their health boards areas could get in touch. We are also particularly interested if PHN deliver their own immunisation clinics in health board premises of GP premises or if some health boards have take a geographical approach to immunisation and have for example developed immunisation teams. Look forward to hearing all your comments and suggestions as always.

The Scottish Spina Bifida Association is looking at a Medicines Management Policy, bearing in mind that we do not have access to medicines management training and the family support staff are not registered members of staff and are not happy to administer medications. I feel that it needs to be a policy reflecting self or carer management of medicines whilst in the centre.
We are also looking at developing an Intimate and Personal Care Policy, bearing in mind that we do not have access to bowel or bladder management training and the family support staff are not registered members of staff and are not happy to carry out intimate procedures as they do not see that as their role.
