Facilitation Toolkit Working GroupThis group are meeting to develop an online Facilitation Toolkit. This will be a section of the website that individuals can access and download tools to aid them in facilitation. It is envisaged that this will be a dynamic section of the website which any member can contribute to on an ongoing basis. If you would like to join this group, or contribute with any facilitation tools that you are currently using and find useful, please contact one of the group members. Group members: Caroline Scott; Kevin Hurst; Joyce Surfleet; Kate Cocozza.

Clinical Competency Self Assessment ToolAssessment of clinical competence is a challenge that faces us all.
How do we know when we are competent and how do we maintain competence.
The six principles that govern the adjustment of the scope of professional
practice (U.K.C.C. 1992) gave nurses a new freedom to tailor care to
their patients needs. However interpretation of these principles
differs from Trust to Trust and from nurse to nurse. To help address this problem the Professional and Practice Development
Nurses Forum (PPDNF) set up a working group to develop a tool which would
aid nurses self-assess their own competency in any clinical area. This
tool was designed to encourage nurses to reflect on a chosen area of
practice and consider its evidence base together with their own
knowledge and competence in this area. An action plan was included to
allow for the recording of plans to develop practice where required.
A formal audit of the tool was carried out April/May 1998 and findings
acted upon. The National Board for Scotland (NBS) Network Project was happy to support
the tool and saw that it complemented the work carried out in the Network
Project. This support allowed the PPDNF to publish and distribute a launch
pack to trusts and universities throughout Scotland. The launch pack
includes copies of the competency self-assessment tool and offers recipients
the opportunity to purchase the teaching pack. This was distributed in
October 1999 with the tool being officially launched at the PPDNF conference
November 1999. A Teaching Pack has been designed to accompany the tool to enable Trusts
to introduce the tool to nursing staff. The Teaching Pack includes slides,
overheads, a Power Point Presentation Disc, presenters notes and
a printing resource to allow trusts to print the competency self-assessment
tool for their own staff. To date 26 packs have been purchased by hospital
trusts and universities from all over Scotland. Plans are already underway to further evaluate this tool. In the meantime it is hoped that the tool will enable nurses to reflect on their practice and help ensure that the care planned for their patients is based on the best evidence available. The tool will also provide documented evidence for the UKCCs PREP requirements. On a larger scale the correct use of the tool should help trusts meet the governments agenda for Clinical Governance and Clinical Effectiveness. Reference

Risk Management Tool for Practice DevelopmentRisk management is an integral part of the Clinical Governance agenda and along with other quality initiatives has the overall aim of improving care. Risk management is about identifying risk, evaluating potential consequences and determining the most effective method of controlling or responding to risk...
